Bone marrow biopsy
Why is it needed?
Bone marrow is the factory where all blood cells are made (including plasma cells which are increased in myeloma). We can get more information about your illness by performing a bone marrow biopsy
How much sample do we collect?
We collect about 20-30 mls of bone marrow through a small biopsy needle and also take a small piece of bone using the same needle.
If you give us permission for a sample for research purpose, we will take an extra 10 mls of marrow at the same time. Please remember that we need samples for pursuing good quality clinical research that has the potential to change lives.
Important things to notice
This is NOT an operation and you do not need to be sedated.
You can go home after a few hours. You may have some pain after the biopsy for which simple pain killers will be adequate. If there is increasing pain of swelling at the area of biopsy, please come back to see the doctor with out delay
